Briefing 139 – National Care Service: Revised Government Plans

thumbnail of Policy Briefing 139 Revised NCS Jan 2024The Scottish Government has radically revised its plans for a National Care Service.   This follows negotiations with COSLA and the NHS over the summer of 2023.

The new plans were set out by the Minister for Social Care in December in letters to two parliamentary committees.

This briefing sets out what we know so far about the new plan for a National Care Service and what it will cost.

Rather than introduce a new Bill, the Government intends to progress the current Bill making significant amendments to it at Stage 2.  These amendments will not be seen until after the Stage 1 vote, which has been postponed again and must now take place by 1 March 2024.
