UNISON is organised into local branches with locally elected officers and stewards who have access to all the supports of the Scottish and UK organisation.
This way, you get the best representation with a knowledge of local circumstances along with the ability to link into the national structures on major issues. It also means you have a direct say in electing your local reps.
Most branches are based on employers (eg local authorities or health service areas). Voluntary sector branches are often grouped with the local authority and some services with a nationwide remit have Scotland-wide branches. See below for branches grouped under employer types.
