Gordon McKay speaking in support of Motion 14 – Speaking ‘In a Personal Capacity’
“I’m disappointed that the NEC is opposing this sensible motion but to be fair in the last few years I’ve opposed some of their decisions. I said the NEC were wrong last year when they wanted you to vote down a rule change meaning they could allow unemployed members to hold office. I disagreed with them this year when they cut funding for There For You Welfare at a time when our members needed it most.”
“What I didn’t do though, when I opposed those decisions, was to put up a big poster in bold capitals saying Gordon McKay, UNISON and then in font size six, write ‘speaking in a personal capacity’ and the reason I won’t do it is because it’s just wrong.”
“Our members trust us because they trust our union. They trust us because we speak on behalf of 1.3 million members. They trust us because when we speak, what they hear is our union. Our union’s name is not for sale. When we use the UNISON name we speak on behalf of our union, not in a personal capacity.”
