Migrant Workers – Frances Pollock

Frances highlighted the vital but undervalued contribution of migrant workers in public services — often made in the face of racism, exploitation and an increasingly hostile political climate.

She condemned exploitative sponsorship schemes likened to modern-day slavery, the financial burden imposed on workers, and government immigration rules that separate families and deter new staff.

She also warned of the impact of far-right violence and divisive government rhetoric—such as describing the UK as an “island of strangers”—which fuels hostility and undermines community cohesion.

Frances urged support for Composite G to ensure UNISON puts migrant workers at the forefront of campaigning for fair treatment, safety, and an end to discrimination.
