More social care staff vote to strike

Social care workers at Blue Triangle Housing Association have voted overwhelmingly for strike action in a dispute over pay, says UNISON today (Friday).

More than eight in ten (85%) staff backed walkouts, which UNISON said revealed a care sector in crisis.

The vote was the second time in just 6 months that social care workers have voted for strikes, following Enable Scotland staff who walked out over the summer.

UNISON warned more strike ballots are likely at other care charities unless ministers get to grips with the issues blighting the sector.

The union says that social care staff across the sector have had four years of broken promises from the Scottish Government on pay. Blue Triangle staff say their pay offer of 1% this year and 2% next year with a £250 payment is not enough.

UNISON regional organiser Jennifer McCarey said: “The care sector is in crisis. Care workers in Scotland have had 4 long years of broken promises on pay.

“The Scottish government must sit down with the sector and unions to discuss raising the rate of pay for care work, a commitment they made in 2021 but have failed to deliver on.

“This is the second care charity whose staff are taking action, with others threatening to follow because government inaction has given them no choice.

“Every care worker in Scotland deserves respect for the work they do and paid a decent wage.”
