Sue Silva – The Legacy of the Year of Black workers

Sue Silva speaking in support of Composite C – The Legacy of the Year of Black workers

“As we reflect on the monumental success of UNISON’s Year of Black Workers 2023, it is essential to acknowledge the profound impact this initiative has had on our union and beyond. The campaign underscored the ongoing struggle against racism and the critical need for continuous efforts to ensure equity for Black workers in the workplace and our broader society.”

“In 2022 there was survey conducted in Scotland which highlighted some alarming statistics that underscore the necessity for immediate change:

  • 40% of Black members reported experiencing racism at work. Disturbingly, this figure rose to 43% in 2023.
  • Lack of Engagement- A staggering 74% of Black members did not seek help from their branches after experiencing racism. Survey comments indicated a severe lack of trust and representation.
  • Nearly 60% of respondents felt they had no voice within their branches, and 88.9% were unaware of the Race Discrimination Protocol.

“These statistics paint a stark picture of the workplace environment for Black members. It is clear that we must act decisively to address these issues.”

“So with the help of my branch I organised network events every forth month, and organising a social event to interact and to educate. we got fabulous regional officer who is so supportive in promoting these events. So there’s more and more black members are coming out.”

“The achievements of the Year of Black Workers must serve as a foundation upon which we build a stronger, more inclusive future. We must reinforce our commitment to tackling systemic racism, advocating for mandatory ethnicity pay gap reporting, and implementing clear, actionable anti-racist policies within all sectors.”

“Our legacy must be one of sustained action and progress. Let us support our Black members through continued advocacy, rigorous policy implementation and by ensuring their voices lead our campaigns. Together, we will ensure that the momentum of 2023 propels us into a future where equality is not just an aspiration but a reality.”
