The Scottish Parliament has recognised UNISON’s University of St Andrews branch chair Alex Duncan for negotiating new support for university staff recovering from cancer.
In a motion laid down by Willie Rennie MSP it notes that the branch negotiated an extension to how long staff can take to return to work after cancer treatment – from eight weeks to 12 weeks on full pay.
Staff have also been promised a closer working relationship with Maggie’s Centre in Kirkcaldy.
UNISON’s University of St Andrews branch chair Alex Duncan said: “Cancer is devastating and those recovering from the disease face a range of difficult treatments.
“I am proud of what we have negotiated it will make a difference and I recognise the work of the university in helping to make this improvement a reality.
“Staff will also get better information, a dedicated website and improved engagement with human resources managers – all of which is very important.
“Cancer affects patients, friends and family so the more we can support people going through this the better.”
