John Swinney told council staff need more than platitudes

UNISON members met first minister John Swinney at Anderson High School on his visit to Shetland this week.

The meeting was on the same day that UNISON notified Perth & Kinross Council that schools and early years centres will close for two weeks from 21 October in the first minister’s constituency, as part of the ongoing local government pay dispute.

Shetland council worker and UNISON member Susanne Gens said: “The Scottish government needs to understand that council staff need more than platitudes. The Scottish government need action to tackle the severe decline in local government funding and they want to see start councils and their dedicated workforce valued – as they do other areas of public services.”
