Stuart spoke in support of Motion 71, stressing that international law, human rights and multilateral cooperation are fundamental trade union values. He warned that increasing attacks on international institutions and the rule of law threaten workers’ rights, democracy and peace across the world.
Stuart highlighted the importance of standing in solidarity with workers affected by conflict, occupation and authoritarianism, while defending the role of organisations such as the United Nations, International Labour Organisation and World Health Organisation.
He also argued that investment should be directed towards public services rather than increased military spending, and called for stronger international cooperation to protect labour rights, tackle corporate power and uphold justice. He urged conference to support the motion and reaffirm UNISON’s commitment to international solidarity.
