Council pause on fire and rehire and further talks on equal pay are welcome

UNISON has welcomed Glasgow City Council’s decision to pause its plans for fire and rehire, allowing further talks with trade unions over equal pay to take place early next week, says UNISON today (Friday)

The decision follows talks today involving the Scottish government, Glasgow City Council and trade unions, with UNISON continuing to press for a fair resolution to the dispute.

UNISON Glasgow City branch secretary Chris Sermanni said: “We welcome the council’s decision to pause fire and rehire and to recommence talks next week.

“However, these discussions must be productive and must be underpinned by increased funding to address the concerns we have raised with the Scottish government today.”

UNISON Scottish secretary Lilian Macer said: “We have said all along that we will not be bullied into accepting a shoddy deal for council staff.

“It’s welcome news that workers are no longer facing the immediate threat of fire and rehire, and we hope the talks next week can make meaningful progress.

“UNISON will continue to stand with Glasgow’s council workers and press for a fair deal that properly recognises the concerns they have raised.”
