Outsourced workers need strong union too – Jim McFarlane

Jim McFarlane, NEC member, spoke in support of Motion 3, highlighting the growing number of UNISON members delivering public services while employed by private contractors.

He stressed that outsourced workers deserve the same strong union representation, support and opportunities to participate in UNISON as members employed directly in the public sector. Jim argued that building the union in the private sector requires targeted organising, better support for workplace activists and stronger representation for outsourced workers within UNISON’s democratic structures.

He welcomed the motion’s proposals to develop organising resources, strengthen branch support and campaign for services to be brought back in-house where appropriate, ensuring the voices of private contractor members are heard at every level of the union.
