She warned that when activists are targeted for standing up for colleagues, it not only harms the individual involved but also discourages others from becoming workplace representatives and weakens the union’s ability to organise effectively.
Josephine stressed that an organising union must also be a union that protects its organisers. She welcomed the motion’s proposals to strengthen support for reps, gather evidence on the scale of trade union victimisation and campaign against employers who target union activists. She urged conference to back the motion, reinforcing the principle that an injury to one is an injury to all.
