He argued that immigration policies which tie workers to employers increase the risk of exploitation and weaken employment rights for everyone, while rejecting attempts to blame migrant workers for staffing shortages and pressures on public services.
Mark stressed that the solution lies in fair pay, investment in public services and stronger collective bargaining, not restrictive immigration policies. He welcomed the composite’s emphasis on organising and empowering migrant workers within UNISON, ensuring they have a stronger voice in shaping the union. Concluding his speech, he reminded conference that solidarity has no borders and urged delegates to support the composite.
